Even if you don’t have a degree in interior design, you can make the old, dark dungeon under your home into a bright, lively spot that everyone in your family would love to be in. Before you decorate though, there are a couple of good tips you should remember about designing.
The basement is a naturally dark area in your home. Like other basements, yours might have only a small rectangular window to admit light and air. The rest of the basement is really dominated by four solid walls. These walls can make the basement seem cramped and uninviting especially if it is painted dark or simply unpainted. Add more life and color into your basement by choosing light colors. Pastel and mild colors are not just more soothing to the eyes. They also create the illusion of more space which adds to the inviting and comfortable feel of your basement. Lighting An important part of basement design is lighting. Just like your wall color, your lights can also help bring in more life. Ideally, a basement should have bright and direct lights. This is especially if you plan to use your basement for family fun or for hobby work. Bright lights create a cheerful atmosphere and let you see whatever you are doing better. There is no rule though that says you have to use only directional lighting. Aside from a direct light source, you can also add a few lamps or recessed lighting so you can control the atmosphere of your basement for certain activities. Floor The floor material seems like a no-brainer. Nothing is more inviting than soft carpeting. Then again, you should think twice about this. Moisture can seep into your basement either through the walls or through the floor. An expensive carpet might only get ruined especially if it is firmly attached on the floor. You could settle for rugs or fluffy mats instead. At least you can easily remove these items if your basement becomes especially damp. These are only the basic concerns for basement design.
