Framing Basement Walls to Hide Unwanted
Obstacles
One thing that you can do in framing basement walls is you can hide unwanted obstacles such as pipes, hot and
cold air ducts and even water meters.
The unsightly floor joist above can also be hidden. In
order to accomplish these projects to hide the unwanted items, you will build a frame around the item to cover
them up and make them look like part of the room after it is decorated.
There are many times pipes and wiring running along the floor joist in the ceiling and down the walls of your
basement that service the rooms above. Making sure you can access these pipes and wires is something you need to
remember in framing basement walls. In the ceiling area you will need to allow a 2 to 3 inch space so you can
access these pipes or wires if needed. If the pipes are running down the sides of the walls make them accessible by
placing a removable panel over the area and it will blend into the décor of the wall after decorating. The other
method is to stick build around the pipes. Stick building is a way that you attach wooden strips perpendicular with
nails to the floor joist above. Then with pressure treated wooden strips attached to the basement floor you can then cut studs to go
vertically around the pipes. One caution when working with water pipes, if they are the old copper pipe, be careful
when applying pressure to them.
The process of hiding these obstacles can be easy if you take the time to find help on the internet if you need
assistance in framing basement walls in your
particular basement project.
